These classes provide a stimulating environment in which to develop and explore the technique of tapestry weaving. New students will be taught basic tapestry weaving skills, which include:

putting on a warp at the right tension;
knotting-on, which is the formal start and finish of every tapestry;
learning how to manipulate the warps by hand;
learning how to handle a tapestry bobbin;
learning how to lay in the chosen yarn;
weaving a separate area - rectangular, triangular, circular;
experiencing colour mixing through twisting yarn to give a speckled look, and hatching and spotting with two bobbins.

With these basic skills, students can go on to tackle an image in the colours of their choice. It is also possible to sample a range of textural techniques which give the tapestry a bas relief quality. For more advanced students, long term projects are discussed and supported by regular demonstrations and suggested plans of action.

William Jefferies studied tapestry at Edinburgh College of Art and then worked at the Dovecot before going on to do an MA at the Royal College of Art. He weaves to commission and produces speculative tapestries for exhibition. He has work in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Crafts Council, Scottish Arts Council and the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.

He teaches at Morley College and Huron University, London. He regularly conducts workshops across the UK.
